Forex trading in India

Legal position, local regulator, payment methods and the brokers that accept traders from India.

Is forex trading legal in India?

Indian residents can legally trade only rupee-based currency pairs and a few permitted cross pairs on recognised Indian exchanges, through SEBI-registered brokers. Leveraged forex with offshore brokers is not permitted, and the RBI names unauthorised platforms on its Alert List.

Local regulator
SEBI, Reserve Bank of India (RBI)

India has the largest English-language forex audience in Asia and some of the tightest rules. Exchange-traded currency derivatives on NSE, BSE and MSE are legal and regulated. Most international brokers that accept Indian clients do so through offshore entities, which puts the trader, not the broker, on the wrong side of foreign exchange rules. Our India pages show which entity would hold your money and what the RBI says about the platform.

Check any broker against the RBI’s list of unauthorised platforms with our searchable RBI Alert List.
